The caption of the above photo reads: “The Garden Club of P.S. 52, Academy St. and Broadway, celebrated Arbor Day by planting an apple tree in the school garden. If all goes well, the students to follow will probably have plenty of apples for the teacher. Richard Mason (left) holds the trees as dirt is filled in, while Principal Abraham Wiener looks on. At the right, student gardeners (left to right) William Greaves, David Maluski, Fred Hildesheim, Norman Greenwald, Jerry Sachs, Ernest Tillman and Joseph Bohn prepared the ground for the planting. Other schools throughout the Bronx and uptown areas will hold Arbor Day celebrations this week.”
I happened upon these images while rifling through an old newspaper archive. Click on the photo to enlarge the image. Take a look at the faces and names. Are you one of these boys? Do you have any memories you would like to share about the old days of P.S. 52? Did the apple tree ever produce fruit?
I encourage you to comment below and share your Inwood memories with the rest of us.
